  • Substrate: Pasteurized straw, hardwood sawdust, or logs

  • Temperature: 50–75°F depending on strain

  • Humidity: 80–95%

  • Light: Low ambient light (not darkness)

  • Airflow: Good airflow to prevent long stems

Shiitake (Lentinula edodes)
Native Habitat: Decaying hardwood (especially oak)
Biome Requirements:

  • Substrate: Fresh oak logs or supplemented hardwood sawdust blocks

  • Temperature: 55–75°F

  • Humidity: 80–90%

  • Light: Shade or dim indirect light

  • Moisture: Logs must be soaked periodically

Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus)
Native Habitat: Old beech, oak, maple trunks
Biome Requirements:

  • Substrate: Hardwood sawdust or logs

  • Temperature: 60–75°F

  • Humidity: 85–95%

  • Light: Very low diffuse light

  • Airflow: Gentle airflow (too much causes drying)

Chicken of the Woods (Laetiporus sulphureus)
Native Habitat: Oak, cherry, beech
Biome Requirements:

  • Substrate: Fresh hardwood logs

  • Temperature: 65–80°F

  • Humidity: 85–95%

  • Light: Minimal light needed

  • Note: Slow colonizer, long timelines (months to a year)

Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor)
Native Habitat: Dead hardwood almost everywhere
Biome Requirements:

  • Substrate: Hardwood logs or chips

  • Temperature: 55–75°F

  • Humidity: 80–95%

  • Light: Indirect light (more than oysters)

  • Airflow: Standard indoor grow airflow

Comb Tooth (Hericium coralloides)
Native Habitat: Dead hardwood fallen branches
Biome Requirements:

  • Substrate: Hardwood sawdust or logs

  • Temperature: 55–70°F

  • Humidity: 85–95%

  • Light: Low diffused light

  • Airflow: Gentle and steady

Morel (Morchella americana)
Native Habitat: Forest floor under elm, ash, apple
Biome Requirements:

  • Substrate: Wood chips mixed with composted leaves

  • Temperature: 45–65°F in spring

  • Humidity: Moderate outdoor spring moisture

  • Light: Normal filtered forest light

  • Note: Hard to cultivate reliably indoors

Reishi (Ganoderma tsugae)
Native Habitat: Hemlock stumps in NY forests
Biome Requirements:

  • Substrate: Hardwood sawdust with supplements or hemlock logs

  • Temperature: 70–80°F

  • Humidity: 85–95%

  • Light: Low light to form proper fruiting shapes

  • Note: Likes warm, consistent, stable environments

    Purslane

  • Full Sun

  • Temperature: 60°F to 90°F (16°C to 32°C) is ideal for mature plants.

  • Germination: Warmer soil, around 70-85°F (21-29°C), significantly improves seed germination.

  • Aerate roots.

  • Watering: Water sparingly
