When we first began exploring farm-housing models, our instinct was to lean on economic data like costs, returns, and market trends. But it quickly became clear that these numbers only told part of the story.

So the research pivoted into turning to the New York State Annual Reports for Small Farms, which offer consistent, statewide snapshots of farm performance. These reports became our foundation that not just helped with understanding viability, but for identifying patterns that could inform adaptable, resilient design. Here are some of the iterations that were created.


Another challenge we were faced with was the color scheme. It is a fundamental aspect of our research and wanted to make sure we represented our information using this color palate. Starting with three shapes our initial decision was focused on using a combination of three primary colors, but as our research evolved, we realized we had to expand the color palate to be able to successfully label our parts. Here were some of the colors we tested.
